Carbon fibre: strong & durable, yet remarkably light
Carbon fibre is made by taking several thousand carbon filaments, each smaller than a human hair, which are bundled together and woven into a fabric.
The fabric is mixed with a matrix of plastic resin to form a “composite material” which, although expensive, is one of the strongest yet lightest materials on earth. In fact, for more than 50 years carbon fibre has been used to manufacture high-end sporting goods and vehicles. Joints are moulded, not welded, for strength and integrity. Ideal for wheelchair manufacture, carbon fibre gives the chair properties once thought impossible to achieve. |
